![]() ![]() I graduated in 2007 when the economy was in decline. What made you come to construction and why did you stay? My dad and uncle are union painters so growing up I was always familiar with the trade. It’s great to look back and say you’re a part of it. What has been the highlight of your career in construction? I think the biggest thing is when you see buildings from nothing and you see how everyone works together, and how it comes together as a whole at the end of the project. I started off as an apprentice and now I find myself running jobs and working with all the trades and coordinating and growing everyday. “I don’t think there’s a better profession out there.How long have you worked for OCP and how has your role progressed? I’ve been working with OCP for four years. “It’s hard but I don’t regret a day,” Greenlee said of the job. “It’s not the extraordinary things they notice, but something as simple as a smile.” “I have been amazed by the gratitude that patients express,” Kendrick said. Kendrick noted that while nurses aren’t invincible or have super powers, the little things often keep them going. But even as a manager, she’s still a nurse first and foremost. In her leadership role, she’s been able to hire and mentor some excellent professionals. Kendrick said her ability to interact with the next generation of nurses keeps her going. “I need to break down barriers to help nurses get the job done and try to make their environment safer and more efficient to do their job.” “As an administrator, I’m always looking at ways to help direct care providers in caring for their patients,” Greenlee said. While physicians, respiratory therapists and pharmacists are key players in patient care, nurses are the 24/7 constant, and that’s what’s difficult. Greenlee described nurses as the glue that brings everything together. “During disasters, we often become the second victim but we put our needs aside to care for others,” she said. In the end, it’s all about service and helping those in need. Kendrick agreed, noting that a nurse’s job doesn’t end at the end of a shift or the day. “There are so many different requirements for each situation and when you throw in patients and family members and helping everyone involved, it can be very complicated and challenging.” “Our work is extremely complicated with the amount of information out there,” Greenlee said. #MYTIME PROMEDICA HOW TO#“It was hard, I had to learn how to deal with people in a whole new way but it was wonderful.”Īsk a nurse how to describe their job in one word and you’ll likely hear “stressful.” With long shifts and a variety of situations in which you don’t know what’s going to happen day to day, nursing is both mentally and physically challenging. “I was young, I remember I was a baby really, just 18,” Greenlee recalled. Nursing affords me the opportunity to serve others.”Īfter her experience in the hospital following her car accident, Greenlee went right to nursing school following her high school graduation. “For me, nursing has been a means to provide health education to my family as well as my community and patients,” she said. Growing up, Kendrick would hear her family members talk about the human body and illnesses that did not make sense to her and it left her with what she called, “a million questions.” In addition, she learned that African Americans have a higher mortality and morbidity than other cultures. “Nursing offered me the opportunity to have a career that would fuel that love.” “During my 12th-grade advanced biology class, I fell in love with the complexity of the human body,” Kendrick said. ![]() She loved science and education and felt the need to serve people. Some work for nursing homes and schools, for hospice, mental health agencies and the military.įor Cathy Kendrick, clinical nursing director at University Hospital, Michigan Medicine in Ann Arbor, nursing was her calling. Many work in private practices, for health agencies and primary care clinics, in home health care and at outpatient surgery centers. Nursing is one solution to that problem.Ībout 62 percent of all employed registered nurses work in hospitals, but there are other opportunities as well. With more than 3 million nurses in the United States according to the National Health Care Provider Solutions, a non-profit organization that works to educate health care workers, the nursing field is expected to grow because people are living longer, but tend to be sicker and have more conditions that require health interventions. A 2013 study titled “Men in Nursing Occupations” showed that while male registered nurses more than tripled since 1970, men make up just 9.6 percent of the registered nursing workforce. ![]()
